WorldSkills Calgary 2009

Skills/Compétences Canada, the Canadian Member Organization of WorldSkills International, put forward Canada’s name to host the 40th WorldSkills Competition.

Since its inception in 1989, Skills/Compétences Canada has evolved into a pan-Canadian organization offering skilled trades and technology competitions at the regional, national and international levels. Skills/Compétences Canada has represented Canada at WorldSkills Competitions since 1991.

The bid process was led by the SAIT Polytechnic, in conjunction with many partners including EnCana, Cisco Systems, PCL Construction, Enerflex, Calgary Airport Authority, Tourism Calgary, Calgary Exhibition and Stampede, and Travel Alberta. The bid was supported by the Government of Canada, the Government of Alberta, and the City of Calgary.

In May 2004, at the WorldSkills General Assembly in Hong Kong, Canada officially won the right to host the 2009 WorldSkills Competition. WorldSkills Calgary 2009 Ltd., a not-for-profit organization, was established.

The Calgary Competition is proposed for the first two weeks in September 2009, with competition dates scheduled from September 1st to 7th, 2009.

As part of the solution to the skilled labour shortage, WorldSkills Calgary 2009 views the hosting of the WorldSkills Competition as an opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of skills development in youth.
